Hon. David Piccini: Ontario's Commitment to Public Policy and Infrastructure

May 3, 2024

Hon. David Piccini, Ontario Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, recently visited the Oaks Revitalization Association (ORA), where he passionately discussed Ontario’s transformative public and social initiatives.

Joined by Mark Tenaglia and Joe Williams, the conversation underscored the government's commitment to outcome-based funding, particularly beneficial for individuals involved with the justice system who are now finding new opportunities.

Minister Piccini met with three participants from our Skilled Trades Development Program (STDP). During their meeting, these individuals shared inspiring stories about how the program and government support have profoundly transformed their lives. They discussed their journey through our training programs, detailing the personal and professional growth they've experienced.

Additionally, they proudly presented photos and videos of their current projects, showcasing the skills and expertise they've acquired through their hard work and dedication. This encounter highlighted the tangible impacts of supportive public policies on real lives, further underscoring the success of the program. Two are currently completing training programs, while the third proudly works at Medi Group, engaged in masonry. The pride in their achievements was undeniable, particularly through shared photos and videos showcasing the skilled brickwork.

Ontario's Premier, Doug Ford, is admired for his inclusive vision, focusing solely on potential and removing systemic barriers to help everyone achieve their fullest potential. This approach has facilitated significant investments in areas previously hard to reach, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to succeed.

Minister David Piccini's discussion on the broader impact of these policies extends beyond individual achievements to significant enhancements in community infrastructure and development. The government's investments are transformative, reshaping not just lives but the very fabric of the province. This strategic commitment is particularly visible in the construction and improvement of critical facilities such as hospitals, schools, and bridges—infrastructure that is essential not only for the current well-being of the community but also for its future resilience and prosperity.

These infrastructure projects do more than provide necessary services; they also act as major employment hubs, offering numerous job opportunities across various sectors. By creating these jobs, the government is not only addressing immediate economic needs but is also investing in the workforce of the future. This provides a dual benefit: it helps build essential public assets while fostering employment that instills a deep sense of pride and accomplishment among workers, particularly the younger generation who are entering these fields with fresh perspectives and renewed energy.

Through these initiatives, Minister Piccini highlights a holistic approach to development that intertwines economic growth with social advancement, ensuring that the enhancements made today will benefit Ontarians for generations to come. This strategy not only supports the current population but also prepares the province to meet future challenges head-on, creating a sustainable and vibrant community landscape.

Particularly noteworthy is the shift in the trades sector, where diversity and inclusion are now at the forefront. New initiatives aim to replace retiring workers with youths and individuals from various backgrounds, thus enriching the sector with fresh perspectives and skills.

The tireless efforts and dedication of those who champion and execute these transformative policies are deeply appreciated. Premier Doug Ford has shown exceptional commitment, going above and beyond to not only oversee the construction of physical infrastructures but also to cultivate a strong, inclusive community that all Ontarians can take pride in.

Under the leadership of Premier Doug Ford’s government, Ontario is building a workforce that is strong, skilled, and reflective of our province’s diversity. A workforce where youth from marginalized communities can access real careers, earn real wages, and contribute to a prosperous Ontario.

Training isn’t about getting everything right the first time. It’s about showing up, trying, failing, learning, and coming back stronger the next day.

In the skilled trades, success starts long before the first tool hits the ground. It begins with showing up, early, prepared, and ready to work. Being on time isn’t just about the clock; it’s about respect, for yourself, your crew, and the craft you’re building.
